664. Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle (01)

Title: Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle (01)
Genre: Action, Adventure, Comedy
Year: 2017

Summary: In Brantford, New Hampshire, in 1996, the young Alex Vreeke is given the Jumanji board game by his father, after finding it on a beach one year earlier. Uninterested, Alex sets it aside, but finds it transformed into a video game cartridge after being entranced by the game's drum beats later that night. Opting to play the game, he finds himself sucked inside; his family abandon their home following his disappearance.
Twenty years later, in 2016, four Brantford High School students - Martha Kaply, Bethany Walker, Spencer Gilpin and Anthony "Fridge" Johnson - are sent to clean up the school's basement as detention for their behaviour. While serving it, Fridge discovers Alex's discarded video-game system, which he and Spencer decide to play, encouraging the girls to join them. While picking playable characters, they are unable to select the first one, instead choosing the other four. Upon starting the game, each is sucked into Jumanji, landing within a jungle in the forms of their chosen game avatars - Spencer as muscular explorer and archaeologist Dr. Xander Bravestone; Fridge as diminutive zoologist Franklin Finbar; Martha as commando and martial arts expert Ruby Roundhouse; and Bethany as male cartographer and paleontologist Professor Sheldon Oberon.
While coming to terms with their situation, the group each find themselves with three marks denoting lives on their arms, with Bethany losing her first after being eaten by a hippopotamus. Spencer deduces that if they lose all three, they will die in real life. The group encounter non-player character Nigel Billingsley, the game's guide, who provides them with the game's narrative and their characters' backstories. The group learn that their goal is to end a curse on Jumanji, brought about by corrupt archaeologist Professor Van Pelt, after stealing a magic jewel called "the Jaguar's Eye" from its shrine, gaining control of all the jungle's animals. Nigel hands Spencer the jewel, after stealing it from Van Pelt, instructing the group to return it to a statue at the shrine and call out "Jumanji", in order to "lift the curse" and leave the game, before driving off.
While coping with their avatars, "weaknesses" and Van Pelt's men, the group encounter Alex, operating the fifth avatar - pilot Jefferson McDonough - who takes them to a jungle house built by Alan Parrish, the game's previous player. Upon realising his identity, all are equally shocked upon learning how long Alex has been trapped in the game, Alex having believed himself to have been trapped for merely months. With a common goal, the group vow to help Alex return home with them. Dealing with further problems while heading for the shrine, the group co-ordinate to overcome the challenges given by the game, eventually reaching the shrine, where Van Pelt has them surrounded with a pack of jaguars and his own men. Working together, while the others act as distractions, Spencer and Martha outmaneuver Van Pelt with the game's mechanics, returning the jewel to the statue - upon uttering the game's name together, the group destroy Van Pelt and return home.
Returning to the school basement, the group find Alex is not with them. Upon leaving school later that day, they become confused at finding the formerly dilapidated Vreeke home restored and decorated for a Christmas family gathering. An adult Alex soon greets the group, recognising them, and explains that when the game ended, he was returned to 1996. He reveals that he is now married with children, having named his eldest daughter after Bethany out of gratitude for her saving his life. The following summer, the four have become firm friends after their experiences in the game, with Spencer starting a relationship with Martha. When the group hear the drumbeats of Jumanji coming from the game cartridge, Fridge crushes it with a bowling ball to prevent anyone else from playing it.

Meanwhile, teenager Yi lives with her mother Yi and Nai Nai in an apartment building. She lives a busy life and neglects to spend time with her family and her friends, football fan Peng and his tech-savvy and popular cousin Jin. Yi is also a violinist who misses her late father, who was also a violinist.
One evening, Yi encounters the Yeti near her cubby house on the roof of her Shanghai apartment building, which she names "Everest." While hiding him from Burnish Industries' helicopters, Yi gains his trust by feeding him Baozi and treating his wounds. Yi learns that Everest wants to reunite with his family on Mount Everest while Everest learns about Yi's desire to travel across China. When Burnish Industries' private security forces closes in on Everest' hiding place, Everest flees with Yi. After narrowly escaping a Burnish helicopter at the Oriental Pearl Tower, Yi and Everest flee on a ship carrying red cola cans, followed by Peng and a reluctant Jin.
Yi, Everest, and the boys reach a port in southern China and travel on a truck. After their crate falls off the truck, they end up in a forest. There, Everest awes the humans with his mystical powers of stimulating growth among blueberry plants. Meanwhile, Mr Burnish and the zoologist Dr. Zara (Sarah Paulson) continue the hunt for Everest. Following Everest and his human friends' trail, they catch up with them in the Sichuan region but Everest uses his power to cause a plant to grow to a gigantic size. While Yi, Everest, and Peng manage to escape on the wind-blown shoot, Jin is left behind and captured by Burnish Industries' Goon Leader (Richard Dietl).
Despite Dr. Zara's outward love for animals, Jin learns that she is planning to hunt down and kill the yeti for medical research. He also learns that the seemingly cold–hearted Mr Burnish has a soft spot for animals including Dr. Zara's pet jerboa. Meanwhile, Yi, Everest and Peng reach the Gobi Desert where they befriend several tortoises, who gratefully accept their giant shoot. Later, they travel to a town on the banks of the Yellow River where Burnish Industries corners them. Peng helps them escape by unleashing a yak stampede. With the help of Jin, they escape across the Yellow River to a field of yellow flowers, which Everest causes to blossom to gargantuan sizes.
Continuing their journey, the humans and Everest eventually reach the Himalayas. While crossing a bridge, they are trapped on both sides by Burnish Industries' forces. However, Mr. Burnish experiences a change of heart after seeing Everest protecting the children causing him to experience a flashback to his first encounter with the yeti which was protecting its young. Seeking to exploit Everest for scientific research, Dr. Zara injects Mr. Burnish with a tranquilizer before tranquilizing Everest as well. When Yi tries to protect Everest, Dr. Zara throws her over the bridge. Burnish Industries then departs the mountain with the captive Everest, Peng, and Jin in tow.
However, Yi manages to cling on to a rope. She then uses her violin, which Everest has magically repaired, to summon ice which reinvigorates Everest, who breaks free of his cage. Dr. Zara makes a last-ditch attempt to kill Everest but it results in the poacher's own demise along with the Goon Leader in a self-triggered avalanche. To protect Everest and the yetis from humanity, Mr. Burnish agrees to help Yi, Peng, and Jin keep his existence a secret. Yi, Peng, Jin, and Everest continue the journey to Mount Everest where they reunite Everest with his family.
Returning home to Shanghai with the help of Mr. Burnish, Yi spends more time with her mother, grandmother, Peng, and Jin.

Title: Pokémon Detective Pikachu
Genre: Adventure, Action, Comedy
Year: 2019

Summary: In the Pokémon universe, Tim Goodman is a 21-year-old insurance salesman who gave up his dream of being a Pokémon trainer following the death of his mother and becoming estranged from his father, Harry Goodman. Tim is contacted by the police of Ryme City, a city where humans and Pokémon live together in peace and catching and battling Pokémon is outlawed, and told his father has died in a car accident.
While visiting through Harry's apartment, Tim meets a deerstalker-clad Pikachu that is able to talk to Tim and be understood by him. They are attacked by a party of Aipom[d] under the influence of a purple gas that Tim accidentally released, but escape. At a café, Pikachu explains he has amnesia and his only clue to his identity are Harry's name and address on his hat, leading him to believe he was Harry's partner. Because Pikachu survived the car crash, he surmises Harry also survived.
Tim shows the gas vial to an aspiring journalist, Lucy Stevens, and she directs him to Ryme Wharf. They meet an informant of Harry's, a Mr. Mime, who directs them to an illegal Pokémon battle arena. The arena's owner Sebastian recognizes Pikachu, who had injured his Charizard in a previous battle, and demands a rematch. Sebastian doses Charizard with the purple gas, stirring it into a violent rage, and Pikachu is unable to summon his electrical powers to fight back. While attempting to save Pikachu, Tim knocks Sebastian over and breaks several gas vials in his clothing, sending the arena's Pokémon into a frenzy. The arena is raided by the police and lieutenant Hideo Yoshida shows Tim security camera footage of Harry's accident to convince him Harry could not have survived.
Tim and Pikachu are contacted by Howard Clifford, the founder of Ryme City who believes living with Pokémon is beneficial to his ailing condition. Howard shows Tim a holographic recreation of the car crash, revealing Harry survived and was captured by Mewtwo, who erased Pikachu's memory. Howard warns Tim that his son Roger is behind the gas, "R", and tells him if he finds Mewtwo, he can find his father. Tim and Pikachu recruit Lucy and travel to the lab facility Harry was investigating, which had been experimenting on Mewtwo and synthesized R from its genes. They are attacked by genetically enhanced Greninja and Pikachu is gravely injured in the escape. Tim manages to communicate to a Bulbasaur for help, and the Bulbasaur takes Tim to a clearing where they meet Mewtwo. Mewtwo heals Pikachu, but before it can reveal its intentions, it is captured by Roger. Regaining his memory of helping Mewtwo escape, Pikachu believes he had betrayed Harry and leaves Tim to return to Ryme City alone.
Pikachu comes across the area where Harry crashed and finds evidence that it was the Greninja, not Mewtwo, who were responsible. In Ryme City, Howard reveals Mewtwo to Tim and takes control of its body using a neural-link helmet. Howard explains that Mewtwo can fuse humans and Pokémon, allowing humans to evolve as Pokémon can, but this can only be done if the Pokémon's mind is in a confused state, thus the need for the R gas. Howard releases R across the city using parade balloons and uses Mewtwo's powers to begin fusing humans with their Pokémon. Pikachu arrives and summons his electrical powers to battle Mewtwo while Tim fights Howard's bodyguard Ms. Norman, who reveals herself to be a genetically-modified Ditto who had been also impersonating Roger. With help from the real Roger, Tim subdues Ditto and removes Howard's helmet, freeing Mewtwo from his control.
Mewtwo restores the city inhabitants to normal, Howard is arrested, and Roger hires Lucy as a full-time reporter, with Tim congratulating her afterwards by asking her on a date. Mewtwo explains that Harry helped Mewtwo escape but was attacked by the Greninja, and Pikachu volunteered to have himself fused with Harry to save his life, the experience erasing their own memories. Mewtwo separates the two and Harry reunites with Tim in his human body, and Tim decides to stay in Ryme City to learn how to become a detective and spend more time with Pikachu, Lucy and Harry.

661. How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World (03)

Title: How To Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World (03)
Genre: Animation. Action, Adventure
Year: 2019

Summary: One year after the events of the previous film, Hiccup, Toothless and their fellow dragon-riders continue to rescue captured dragons in order to bring them to Berk and its bustling dragon and human utopia. Their efforts have resulted in the island becoming overpopulated with dragons. In a response to the overcrowding, Hiccup desires to find the "Hidden World", a safe haven for dragons spoken of by his late father Stoick. Meanwhile, a white female Fury dragon, held captive by warlords, is given to infamous dragon hunter Grimmel the Grisly as bait for him to capture Toothless for the warlords' use as an alpha.
Toothless discovers the white Fury, (a new species that Astrid dubs a "Light Fury") in the woods and the two become enchanted with each other until the Light Fury, sensing Hiccup's nearby presence, flees. Hiccup and Tuffnut later discover Grimmel's dragon traps in the area. Grimmel visits Hiccup that night demanding he hand over Toothless, revealing that he's hunted and killed all the other Night Furies, but Hiccup has prepared an ambush for him; Grimmel escapes, burning down Hiccup's house and most of Berk with his six Deathgripper dragons in the process. In response, Hiccup rallies the citizens and dragons to leave Berk on a quest to find the Hidden World and safety from dragon hunters.
Mid-journey, the Berkians discover an island on which they initially plan to rest for a short while, but soon begin to settle there, dubbing it “New Berk”. Seeing Toothless's inability to fly solo hindering his growing relationship with the Light Fury, Hiccup rebuilds an automatic tail for him. Upon receiving the tail, Toothless flies off, meeting the Light Fury on his own and flying with her to an unknown land. Valka, on a scouting patrol, notices Grimmel's approaching army and quickly reports back to Hiccup. Hiccup and the dragon riders head to capture Grimmel; yet, they fall into his trap and barely escape. Ruffnut is captured, but irritates Grimmel until he lets her go and secretly follows her to the Berkians' new location.
Hiccup and Astrid, searching for Toothless, find the Hidden World and see Toothless and the Light Fury leading the dragons there as a happily mated couple. When the two are soon discovered, Toothless rescues Hiccup and Astrid and returns them to the Berkians, with Hiccup realizing his people would be intruders and unsafe in the Hidden World. Suddenly, Grimmel appears and captures Toothless and the Light Fury (who followed Toothless). Toothless's alpha status allows Grimmel to capture the rest of Berk's dragons by threatening to kill the Light Fury if any dragon or Berkian attacks.
With Astrid's encouragement, Hiccup sets out with the dragon riders to stop Grimmel and his army. Gliding on wingsuits, they catch Grimmel's army off-guard, igniting a battle. Hiccup frees Toothless, resulting in two of Grimmel's Deathgrippers drowning, while Grimmel drugs the Light Fury into obeying him. Hiccup and Toothless give chase, with Toothless using his newly acquired ability to draw in lightning to kill the remaining Deathgrippers. Hiccup manages to jump onto the Light Fury, but Grimmel tranquilizes Toothless midair causing the dragon to fall helplessly. Hiccup, realizing he cannot rescue Toothless alone, frees the Light Fury and implores her to save Toothless. Hiccup is fully prepared to sacrifice himself in order to save Toothless as both he and Grimmel plummet toward the sea. The Light Fury, however, returns to save Hiccup as well while Grimmel impacts the water and drowns.
Back on the island, both Toothless and Hiccup fully realize that dragons will never be safe in the human world. Hiccup bids an emotional farewell to Toothless as all of the Berkians set their dragons free to live in the Hidden World. Toothless and the Light Fury lead the rest of the dragons away to their new home. Three months later, Hiccup and Astrid finally marry on New Berk.
Ten years later, Toothless and the Light Fury are shown to have mated and have given birth to three hybrid dragon fledglings named Night Lights. Hiccup, Astrid, and their two children sail across the sea and reunite with their dragons at the edge of the Hidden World. After introducing his children to his best friend, Hiccup takes their son flying on Toothless while Astrid and their daughter fly on Stormfly, accompanied by the Light Fury and their offspring. Hiccup vows that until humankind is ready to coexist peacefully with dragons, the dragons will stay hidden while the Berkians guard their secret.

660. The Lion King

Title: The Lion King
Genre: Animation, Adventure, Drama
Year: 2019

Summary: In the Pride Lands of Africa, a pride of lions rule over the animal kingdom from Pride Rock. King Mufasa's and Queen Sarabi's newborn son, Simba, is presented to the gathering animals by Rafiki the mandrill, the kingdom's shaman and advisor. Mufasa shows Simba the Pride Lands and explains to him the responsibilities of kingship and the "circle of life", which connects all living things. Mufasa's younger brother, Scar, covets the throne and plots to eliminate Mufasa and Simba, so he may become king. He tricks Simba and his best friend Nala (to whom it is expected Simba will marry) into exploring a forbidden elephants' graveyard, where they are attacked by spotted hyenas led by the ruthless Shenzi. Mufasa is alerted about the incident by his majordomo, the hornbill Zazu, and rescues the cubs. Though upset with Simba, Mufasa forgives him and explains that the great kings of the past watch over them from the night sky, from which he will one day watch over Simba. Meanwhile, Scar visits the hyenas and manages to convince them to help him overthrow Mufasa in exchange for hunting rights in the Pride Lands.
Scar sets a trap for his brother and nephew, luring Simba into a gorge and having the hyenas drive a large herd of wildebeest into a stampede that will trample him. He informs Mufasa of Simba's peril, knowing that the king will rush to save his son. Mufasa saves Simba but ends up hanging perilously from the gorge's edge. Scar refuses to help Mufasa, instead sending him falling to his death. He then convinces Simba that the tragedy was Simba's own fault and advises him to leave the kingdom and never return. He orders the hyenas to kill the cub, but Simba escapes. Scar tells the pride that both Mufasa and Simba were killed in the stampede and steps forward as the new king, allowing Shenzi's clan to live in the Pride Lands.
Simba collapses in a desert and is rescued by Timon and Pumbaa, a meerkat and warthog, who are fellow outcasts. Simba grows up in the oasis with his two new friends and other animals in their oasis, living a carefree life under the motto "hakuna matata" ("no worries" in Swahili). Now a young adult, Simba rescues Timon and Pumbaa from a hungry lioness, who turns out to be Nala. She and Simba reunite and fall in love, and she urges him to return home, telling him that the Pride Lands have become a drought-stricken wasteland under Scar's reign. Feeling guilty over his father's death, Simba refuses and storms off. He then encounters Rafiki, who tells him that Mufasa's spirit lives on in Simba. Simba is visited by the ghost of Mufasa in the night sky, who tells him that he must take his rightful place as king. Realizing that he can no longer run from his past, Simba decides to return to the Pride Lands.
Aided by his friends, Simba sneaks past the hyenas at Pride Rock and confronts Scar, who was about to fight Sarabi. Scar taunts Simba over his role in Mufasa's death and backs him to the edge of the rock, where he reveals to him that he murdered Mufasa. Enraged, Simba reveals the truth to the rest of the pride. Scar, who previously claimed that he arrived too late at the gorge, attempts to defend himself, but his knowledge of Mufasa's last moment exposes his role in Mufasa's death. Timon, Pumbaa, Rafiki, Zazu, and the lionesses fend off the hyenas while Scar, attempting to escape, is cornered by Simba at a ledge near the top of Pride Rock. Scar begs for mercy and attempts to blame his crimes on the hyenas; Simba spares his life, but orders him to leave the Pride Lands forever. Scar refuses and attacks his nephew, but Simba manages to throw him off the cliff after a brief fight. Scar survives the fall, but is attacked and mauled to death by the hyenas, who overheard his attempt to betray them. Afterwards, Simba takes over the kingship and makes Nala his queen.
With the Pride Lands restored to its usual state, Rafiki presents Simba and Nala's newborn cub to the assembled animals, continuing the circle of life.
